Effective June 18, 2012, the Archdiocese of Cincinnati has substantially changed the way it conducts training for its Decree on Child Protection. All training sessions on the Decree will now be known as VIRTUS® Protecting God’s Children Awareness Sessions. Each Awareness Session will last 3 hours. No one under the age of 18 will be allowed in the sessions. You must pre-register with VIRTUS® before attending. Walk-in’s are not permitted. To register follow the registration instructions here

Online Virtus® Registration instructions.
This is in conjunction with the already in place Child Protection Decree Program that the Archdiocese has sponsored for the past several years. Even if you have already completed the Child Protection Decree Program, all people who intend to work or volunteer in any of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati parishes, schools, or institutions, must also attend (or have already attended) a VIRTUS® Protecting God’s Children Awareness Session for the Decree on Child Protection before you are approved to work with children.

Starting July 1, 2014, all people who work or volunteer within the Archdiocese of Cincinnati must attend a live VIRTUS session AND read their monthly bulletins. If you fall behind in reading three or more bulletins, your account will be inactivated until you make arrangements with your local Safe Environment Coordinator.
If you have any questions concerning your VIRTUS account, please go on-line to look at your account information or discuss the matter with your local Safe Environment Coordinator.

Child Protection Decree and Fingerprinting
Do You Plan to Volunteer?

The Archdiocesan Decree on Child Protection requires that all employees and volunteers who have regular contact with children attend a VIRTUS® Child Awareness Session and complete a favorable criminal background check before working or volunteering with children.  Session participants must register with VIRTUS ONLINE, http://www.virtusonline.org before attending a Child Awareness Session.  After attending a training session participants must log onto the VIRTUS website and read monthly articles. There are several parishes that offer the Child Awareness Sessions.  The schedule may be found on the VIRTUS website.

As part of the Decree, employees and volunteers must also submit to a criminal background check. Volunteers are required to complete the background check online with Selection.com from within their VIRTUS account.  Only teachers, clerics, staff, and those who have lived outside of Ohio will need to be fingerprinted.  Individuals who are presently approved to volunteer with children but have not been fingerprinted in the last five years will need to go to their VIRTUS account and access Selection.com by clicking on the toolbox tab.  This will allow those volunteers to complete a background check and update their records.  Active volunteers who have had a background check through Selection.com will not need to resubmit to a background check every five years.

The cost of the background check is $25.  This fee may be paid in one of two ways.  The parish has Fastrax Token numbers which will be prepaid by the parish.  A volunteer may call the Religious Education Office at 347-2646 or may email Jeanne Rieskamp at jrieskamp@lourdes.org, to receive a Fastrax Token number to use for payment when completing the background check online.  Religious Education office hours are 8:30 a.m.- 4:00 p.m. Mon.-Thurs.  Volunteers also have the option of paying for the background check online through personal credit/debit card.
