Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

Could you easily identify a word, image or passage of Scripture that would summarize who you are or who you want to be? In today’s Gospel from St. Luke, Jesus stood in the synagogue and opened the scroll.  He read for the people a text that described himself and his mission.  Before he came to this moment, he had been baptized and spent time in the desert.  He began to be recognized as a preacher and healer.  Jesus stood at this moment in his hometown.  I wondered what his neighbors with him expected the craftsman son of Joseph to say or do.

Historical data suggests that Jesus was about 30 years when he began his public ministry.  The first line of the Scripture Jesus read sets the tone: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me.”  Throughout Jesus’ life, every one of his actions or decisions flowed from how he believed the Spirit was leading him.  Jesus does not simply say he was anointed, but that he was anointed for a purpose: to bring glad tidings to the poor; to proclaim liberty to captives; recovery of sight to the blind; to let the oppressed go free; and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord.

Jesus chose this text to proclaim to the people who he was called to be and what he intended to do.  As we contemplate Jesus’ vocation – his acceptance and discernment – his developing identity, consider how you and I are invited to ask the Spirit to continue to reveal to us our path.  Taking this time for reflection will lead us to recognize the gifts we have been given and how to use them to build God’s kingdom.

I hope you take time for reflection this week.  There are so many gifts given to our community.  How will you use yours?

This weekend we celebrate the Rite of Acceptance at the 11:00 a.m. Mass.  Join me in prayer for our catechumens as they walk toward the Sacraments of Initiation at the Easter Vigil.

Have a blessed week!  Fr. Len
